I just read the statement by the @ExeterChiefs about their #Native mascot and imagery... Long story short: They are retiring their "Big Chief" mascot but keeping the logo, which they describe as "in fact highly respectful".... respectful to whom? /1

The @ExeterChiefs say the mascot is respectful because their (non-Native) partners, (non-Native) rugby players from around the world and (non-Native) members of the community found no issue with it. They say nothing of the tomahawk chop, chants, and their club's "tribe" /2
So, non-Natives decide on behalf of Natives what's respectful to Natives... Does anyone else see the problem with this? Would this be acceptable if about other people of colour? In 2020? /3
I and other Natives offered to speak with members of the @ExeterChiefs board, including @KeironNorthcott (whose twitter page features a smiling Keiron in an un-earned headdress). It is a perfect example of why organisations need more diversity in their boards and sr teams... /4
We Native people are #notyourmascot, @ExeterChiefs. I also think your partners, including @Heineken_UK ( @davidforde15 as Mg Dir), and @Thrifty_UK and others, need a serious rethink. Are they for or against racial equality? /5
It is sad to see this kind of racism being accepted in modern day Britain. #BlackLivesMatter
here in the UK is about recognising the effects of racism and colonialism on people of colour--just like this. It isn't the end of the story, but a new chapter... /6

#NativeAmerican people will continue to be heard until change is made. We are #notyourmascot. The @WashingtonNFL team changed in the US, along with the @Indians & others. @ExeterChiefs will also change--even if later rather than sooner. @CariDaviesTV, @LauraScott__ , @jfkeeler
Thank you so much to @ExChiefs4Change for ALL the work they've done to make the case for change. I and other Native Americans appreciate you standing up for and with us in this fight. :)
