An explainer for people wanting to understand the significance of tonight's arrests:
Tony Chung, Ho Ngok Hang, Yanni Ho and one more (as yet unnamed) former member of Student Localism were arrested in HK under the National Security Law, on charges of secession. They are 16-19.
Tony Chung, Ho Ngok Hang, Yanni Ho and one more (as yet unnamed) former member of Student Localism were arrested in HK under the National Security Law, on charges of secession. They are 16-19.
Police revealed they were being arrested for a social media page called 'Independence Initiative'. The social media page explicitly states that Student Localism is already disbanded, and moreover that all its members are overseas.
Therefore, these arrests are being arbitrarily carried out: just because they are former members of Student Localism, even though they are not involved in running the social media page, they can be arrested for secession.
A reminder also that it is most likely mainland police operating in HK that are behind these arrests. Under the National Security Law, these mainland police units do not have to abide by Basic Law, and are not subject to the HK legal system. They answer to the CCP.
