IMO it should say: White is a distinct cultural identity in the U.S., an identity *defined by* privilege, oppression, enslavement, appropriation, capitalism & domestic & international violence towards non-white &/or non-hetero populations as a means of socioeconomic control. https://twitter.com/KarenAttiah/status/1288464078671949825
The Post has its own style guide fwiw. But if they're going to say White is a "collective group that has had its own cultural and historical impact" then don't sugarcoat it, acknowledge & cite the realities of the true impact White people have had in the U.S. in this definition.
I'd be curious to hear what journalism groups like @aaja @NABJ @sajahq @najournalists @nlgja @TransJournalist have to say and organizations that fight for equity like @ColorOfChange @mediajustice too. This is a good conversation to have. I'm glad The Post has come to a decision!
This is a good thread to read https://twitter.com/ztsamudzi/status/1288476887543619585
Also: This is an opportunity for The Post to be transparent in how they came to this decision (& who had the final judgement) & to describe their editorial judgement too.
There was a LOT of newsroom input from what I was told, which is good! But help the public understand this.
