There are many reasons why lots of people in the UK are obese.
1. Many health food items are expensive. Not all, but many that would help provide variety are. It’s all very well saying go buy some salad leaves as it’s cheap but you can’t have that every night.
2. Gym memberships are expensive. Not everyone can afford them.
3. Kitchenware for dishes can be expensive too.
4. Cooking space and resources in certain homes are lacking. If you’ve got a cabin kitchen for a whole family, producing a large healthy meal is difficult.
5. Lack of cooking confidence. Many schools have limited cooking classes and some parents aren’t able to teach their kids.
6. Time constraints due to jobs, family etc may mean fresh meals take too long to prepare.
7. Fresh food takes up a lot of space and needs to be shopped for constantly. Some people do not have the time or space to get fresh food several times a week.
8. Increased commute times and working hours mean far less time for exercise.
9. Not enough about nutrition is taught to kids. For instance many think fruit juice is healthy when it isn’t.
10. Mandatory exercise for school pupils is only 1hr a week until 16. It needs to be more, and extended to 18 year olds and encouraged at uni.
11. Many children have to cook for themselves as parents have long hours or several jobs. Recipes with several steps or that require dangerous equipment many not be suitable for kids.
