I’ve never understood the fascination with birthdays.

They always seem so phony.

But I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t explain at least a little about the history of birthdays.
When a pharaoh was crowned in ancient Egypt they were instantly transcended to gods.

This day was a huge celebration of the new pharaohs “birth” as a god.

The Greeks expanded on the Egyptian celebrations lighting candles to the Gods
The Ancient Greeks believed after blowing out the candles the rising smoke took their prayers into the sky to be answered.

Ancient Romans were probably the first culture to celebrate birthdays for the common man
The birthdays of famous citizens were turned into holidays.

Every Roman citizen on their 50th birthday would receive a cake baked of flour, olive oil, cheese and honey.
Fast forward to modern times and almost every birthday celebration consists of the Song Happy Birthday to you being sung.

It is said to be the most recognizable song in the world.

But the lyrics happy birthday to you weren’t featured in the original song.
The song is based off the 1893 song by Mildred and Patty Hill entitled good morning to all.

The lyrics were later reworked to become the iconic birthday song.
