Interviewed many, many workers and "creators" all over the world for this @onezero piece on the ~hustle economy~ ... the place you go when a pandemic reveals the emptiness and instability of modern work https://onezero.medium.com/the-gig-economy-is-failing-say-hello-to-the-hustle-economy-13ae3aa91954
The hustle economy is an online labor market where platform-dependent workers create and monetize their own digital products. Think Patreon, Twitch, Substack, Etsy, Teachable, Knowable, Podia, Thinkific, Supercast, Lulu, Smashwords, Outschool, OnlyFans, Gumroad ... etc etc etc
It's *booming* right now -- no big surprise. But not at all clear whether this is a good or sustainable arrangement for workers. They get to do "what they love," yes ... while also shouldering all the risks and costs of their work, to the ultimate benefit of the platform.
Bonus irony: I wrote this while out on furlough from my real job.
Bonus irony #2 I got @ozm's handle wrong ... WHERE IS MY EDIT BUTTON.
