While I think 'liquid biopsies' will be viewed as one of the most important medical breakthroughs of the 2020's, I've got to admit that 'liquid biopsy' is a poor term.

Initially, a liquid biopsy was an alternative for a tissue biopsy of an advanced tumor.

Not anymore.
A 'liquid biopsy' has become a catch-all for a sequencing-based, ML-powered diagnostic test running off blood plasma. However, the application space is broadening beyond just biopsy. For example:

Earlier Detection Screen
Risk of Recurrence/Metastasis
Early Stage Biomarker Test
Therapy Optimization
Personalized Cancer Monitoring
Minimal Residual Disease Testing
Recurrence Monitoring

And, this is JUST for oncology. Keep in mind that liquid biopsies are equally important for transplant medicine:

Rejection Prognosis
Immune Quiescence
Allograft Health
