(THREAD) Here it is - GSL Evidence Review Report - We reviewed over 70 studies on school leadership in the Global South - what impact does it have on student outcomes, what works best in prof devt for school leaders (SLs). http://www.globalschoolleaders.org/s/GSL-Evidence-Review-Report.pdf (1/10)
Takeaway 1: School leadership impacts student outcomes. A study of 65 countries found that students led by top 25% school leaders had the equivalent of 3 extra months of learning per year compared to students led by bottom 25% school leaders. @renata_lemos @danielascur(2 / 10)
School leadership is particularly important post-disasters. After Hurricane Matthew in Haiti (2016), for hardest hit schools, going from a poor to good school leader was equivalent to a 0.43 standard deviation increase in reading per year (3/10)
Takeaway 2: When successful, SL training is highly cost-effective. The Jovem de Futuro training provided to school and district leaders in Brazil cost ~ 5% of public expenditures per student for secondary school, while it increased students learning on average by ~ 30% (4 / 10)
Takeaway 3: Yet, school leaders in many countries are largely tasked with administrative responsibilities, often spending <25% of their time on activities related to student learning @renata_lemos #melissaadelman (5 / 10)
Takeaway 4: Not all SL training programs show improved student learning. Emerging signs of effective programs: 1. Focus on supporting SLs in their use of student-level learning data (ii) Focus on supporting SLs’ teacher development activities (6 / 10)
Takeaway 5: Impact of SL training program depends on other enablers - policies related to selection, accountability, and autonomy of school leaders. Although we see efforts to improve enablers, these are rarely coupled with evaluation (7 / 10)
Takeaway 6: Clear need for a robust and targeted research agenda for the field of school leadership in the Global South. (8/10)
