As President & CEO of @LHSCCanada, I recognize and appreciate the skilled & compassionate care provided by the people I work alongside every day. I just never imagined I would be a recipient of that care, especially in the midst of a pandemic. A thread:
In early April, as COVID-19 was hitting our community, I began to experience severe symptoms associated with a chronic medical condition that had never bothered me much. In a hurry I went from well to sick, scared, and very vulnerable. 2/11
With so much concern around COVID-19 and at that point lack of clarity as to what was going on I visited the assessment centre. My swab later came back negative, although inpatient cases @LHSCCanada were climbing. 3/11
Late that evening my journey as a patient at @LHSCCanada began where many do in our community: the Emergency Department. Despite an initial Improvement in my symptoms during a hospital stay, my condition ultimately declined and I required urgent surgery. 4/11
I spent nine days as an impatient following my surgery. I witnessed countless examples and expression of compassion, teamwork, curiosity, and accountability; not just toward me but for all patients. 5/11
With my own family unable to visit due to COVID-19 visitor restrictions and safety protocols, I experienced first-hand the beneficial impact staff had on patients well-being by providing emotional support that would normally be received from family. 6/11
Following an inpatient post-surgical stay and then several weeks of at-home recovery, I returned to full-time duties as president and CEO of @LHSCCanada Canada on June 1st. 7/11
I am grateful that @LHSCCanada had the expertise to continue providing safe essential health services, recognizing many in our community would still have significant care needs in the midst of this public health emergency. 8/11
My recent medical experience included many moments of profound vulnerability, but I've come to appreciate the opportunity it provided me to better understand first-hand what our patients go through when they arrived at our doors. 9/11
I am forever grateful for the expertise and outstanding compassion provided by staff and physicians @LHSCCanada everyday. Everyone here has a tremendous impact on the patient journey and I am forever grateful to those who played a role in mine. 10/11
It was a strangely overwhelming experience to be on the receiving end of care from my colleagues, but it has strengthened my belief that there is no better place to receive care than right here at @LHSCCanada /End.
