I have now seen a number of responses to this, both on here and on Facebook, and it only serves to underline what a serious problem we have in Scottish politics. Too many independence fans are fiercely unwilling to even countenance the idea that any of it is @ScotGov's fault. https://twitter.com/BBCScotlandNews/status/1288092264326221824
Typical of the responses I've seen (this one's from FB):
"Why did this only focus on Scotland? ... You are kidding yourself if you believe this was done for any other reason than to stop the rise of Independance in Scotland."
It's not the odd crank either. This mindset is common.
It also exposes the stupidity of hitching the independence
argument to a single party in government. It's a category error anyway, but it's also a strategic error. Constitutional change needs argued away from party politics. Otherwise you end up having to deny reality like this.
The logic becomes "The SNP in power is the only route to independence, therefore we who want independence must never criticise the SNP in power." Even when there is a clear failure of government you cannot criticise it, because you've vowed to support independence come what may.
Plus ça change, plus c'est la mĂȘme chose.
I worry about the psychological effects of this too. The testimonies in that programme were heart-rending. The natural, human response is to have sympathy. But this constitutional imperative tells people instead to view those stories as evil propaganda. That'll screw you up.
