I found this Facebook memory today & thought I would share. Would have been my first independent paper as a PhD student. It didn't get accepted until 2010 for a number of important reasons

1. I had a 1 year old. I had another 2 babies by 2010. Life outside academia matters too..
2. It needed so much more work. Lots more drafts and thinking. Rewriting. All part of the process. In hindsight I can see that. I'm not sure PhD student me did 😬😂
3. It got rejected. And rejected again. And I think again. For reasons such as journal fit, aiming too high, needing more work, and a combination of helpful and very unhelpful reviewers. I think this was the paper where reviewer 2 asked 'why are you bothering doing this work'
But we did the work, it got accepted & now has 100+ citations. And I wrote more, passed the PhD, got a job, fast forward a bit have 100+ publications & am a professor. But reading that feedback to that first rejection I thought I'd never get it published let alone do so many more
