When racing motorcycles he once checked himself out of hospital in a full body cast, won the race, crossed the finishing line and then fell off because he couldn't put his feet down
When he found out that Enzo Ferrari had bought him a return ticket to a race (rather than a single in case he was killed) he contemptuously said "And I thought you were a businessman!"
When he broke down almost in sight of the finishing line late in his career (after a race in which his car had basically disintegrated around him) Il Commendatore rushed out to commiserate & Nivola said "At our age days like these are rare. We must learn to enjoy them if we can"
He set off on a Targa Florio with a young mechanic and said "Look, if I'm going to go into a corner too fast I'll shout at you to hide under the scuttle so you're safe". After the race the ashen-faced mechanic said "He started shouting at the first corner and never stopped"
