For GCSE Literature, I explicitly teach students how to write and what to include in the **introduction** for each question. We rehearse this a lot.
A short THREAD on why I do this and what we include for each question. /1

Why?
1. It is the first thing the examiner sees and needs to establish this is going to be a good essay
2. Crucial to set out the argument of the essay and the direction it will take
3. Students are nervous in exams. If they have a well rehearsed intro they are less so /2

**Dr J and Mr H / Macbeth**
As this is an extract question I tell them to begin by locating the extract within the text as a whole. It will be a pivotal moment and so why is it? Does it institgate or culminate a chain of events? If so, how does this link to the Q? /3

More on **Dr J and Mr H/Macbeth**
Macbeth, the extract is the unsex me speech. They might write: ‘When considering how Shakespeare presents LM as a strong women this moment is pivotal because... It arguably instigates a chain of events that sets in motion... As such... /4

This intro is just one sentence and aims to establish the thematic direction of the poem as relevant to the Q: Thematically speaking, the poem explores the way in which nature is a brutal and dominating force /7

I’ll explicitly teach these, model them and rehearse them lots and lots. I might give them a random Q and ask them to write the intro. We’ll then plan the rest of the essay.
