here's a tip for becoming a really really good writer:

every time you go to use an idiom or a metaphor, think about whether those words and impressions mean the same thing in the context you're writing in
one of my very favorite examples of minding the context of idioms comes from @/pudgy_puk's work: "chocotracks" instead of "chickenscratch". when you're in the habit of picking apart common sayings and phrases and looking at their basic elements,
it becomes habit to look at each element and go "does this make sense in the context i'm working in? does this concept even exist yet? is the limited perspective of whatever character i'm using informed enough to know of the topics this idiom references?"

it IS rocket science!
this is one of most basic ways of tweaking your style and voice to fit the subject matter. when you get into this mindset, you're automatically considering and reconsidering your word choice based on subject and your perspective. you KNOW what sounds wrong; trust that instinct.
