I think Elon's tweet is related to PoleStar 2 and the Android Automotive OS it uses. Both the OS and the @PolestarCars are actually pretty impressive. This might be the beginning of auto OS wars. https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1288265150928125952

Here is an excellent video by @TwoBitDaVinci that explains the challenges legacy automakers face with software. They are not good at it and they love outsourcing things. They would be very interested in using Android Automotive OS which is a full OS.

PoleStar 2 (apparently a name that refers to the brightest star aka Polaris aka North Star and not that other thing) will be the first car to use Android Automotive OS. The first deliveries are expected to be in August in Norway. Recent search trends in Norway look promising.

Just to be sure we are not confusing things, Android Auto and Android Automotive OS are two different things. The OS doesn't require a mobile phone. It's a full operating system for cars. Here is a page on the touchscreen that shows energy consumption.

Somebody asked how this is related to Tesla. Check out the graph below that shows Android market share over time.

This time, we are at the very beginning of Android Automotive OS launch. Currently, the number of cars using this OS is zero. PoleStar 2 will be the first car.

The OS is open source and manages infotainment as well as vehicle-related functions like charging, energy consumption, climate control, and bird's-eye view parking. Other automakers will be watching it.

It looks impressive. Check out the video here:

In the past, it didn't matter whether you had the best Nokia phone with the best camera. You'd be missing out if you didn't have access to the app store. A single company can't compete with that because there are thousands of apps created by thousands of smart people.

Elon understands that things are heading in the same direction. Therefore ideally Tesla should offer a package to other OEMs that include the following:

• battery & powertrain hardware & software
• over-the-air software updates
• Supercharger access
• touchscreen & OS
9/

Windows Phone died because app developers ignored it because the user numbers were not high enough to bother. Therefore it's important that in the future the number of cars that use Tesla OS is somewhat comparable to Android Automotive OS.

Elon's comments recently in this video about building a software team in China that will do original work (not just localization) make more sense now. Tesla already has many copycats there. It's a good place to start making the Tesla OS for other OEMs

I think Elon understands that Tesla either needs to have a large enough user base to support its own app store for 3rd party vehicle control apps or they will have to switch to Android Automotive OS too. This isn't about infotainment.
