Latest on #diversity @birminghamcg22 - I spoke to @DCMS sports minister @HuddlestonNigel - his Govt dept oversees appointments to @Birmingham2022 board and in some cases is wholly responsible for them. How the Board is made up is mostly down to @DCMS THREAD
2. Nobody noticed - or seemed to be worried - that every one of the @dcms appointments was white. For over 2 years nothing was done about this. People have raised this repeatedly, concerned that the governance was not reflective of #Birmingham or the #Commonwealth
3. Now, belatedly, action is happening. People and organisations are contrite; change is coming. @thecgf has been at forefront, recognising it needs to ensure better representation in leadership - president Dame Louise has made way from @birminghamcg22 as result.
4. Clamour for more action is growing. A letter signed by over 50 #Birmingham people representing communities, faiths, politics, charities is pressing for lasting change. @LennyHenry has become latest signatory.
5. But over at @dcms the reaction has been muted. Board appointments - the ones overseen by @dcms - were all made âon meritâ. That none of those posts went to Black or Asian people is not the fault of @dcms - âsuitably qualifiedâ Black and Asian people just did not apply...
6. I spoke to sports minister @HuddlestonNigel about this and asked why nothing has been done about the lack of diverse representation @birminghamcg22 for over two years - and had the momentum of #BLM #BlackLivesMatter
and @birmingham_live coverage of issue forced unwilling hand?

7. @dcms plan now to encourage Black and Asian people to apply for the one vacant seat on the Board @birminghamcg22 There was no word on whether any @dcms appointees intend to follow the lead of @thecgf and âmake wayâ for alternative voices. https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/lenny-henry-joins-clamour-more-18677965
8. if a âprocessâ by which @dcms and other Govt appointments are made to public bodies repeatedly ends up with same white, mostly male faces, then surely look at the âprocessâ and change it - otherwise suspicion remains about how motivated people are to bring lasting change.
