Puzzled by takes that treat Biden's VP pick in terms of 2020 electoral calculations alone. In fact, the pick will matter little for that.

But it will have huge consequences for the future. Biden is likely picking the first woman president, who will define our next dozen years.

In other words, I'm surprised this decision isn't getting more attention, that top candidates aren't getting more of a public assessment than they are. We've gotten used to VP picks not mattering much. But there's a good chance Biden is picking the near-term after-next president.
