The response to this article -- or really, the tweet promoting it -- is fascinating. Setting aside the long line of dunk-takes because "TGC men bad" (please see what I did there) and a lot of people tweeting from their Jump to Conclusions Mat . . . https://twitter.com/TGC/status/1288120785760948226
. . . many of whom appear not to have actually read the piece, there is found among them a smattering of comments that prove the relevance of the substance of the article. Yeah, yeah -- the rare steak example is a bad one, but the article's not really about steaks . . .
So the title's not great. But the substance of the article is an important topic. If you doubt that, you probably don't do much apologetic work beyond hot-taking people on social media. A little story:
I kicked a guy out of my church once for a range of unrepentant false teaching. He was not a member but a regular attender. And he was promoting modalism and other heresies. I warned him a few times and he always promised to stop, shut up, and listen . . .
The last straw was after I'd preached on Mark 7, including the line about Jesus declaring all foods clean. Of course I did a little run about the new covenant blessings of being free to eat pork and shellfish . . .
. . . Guy came right up to me after the benediction, before I could even step down, and got in my face. "Not blood sausages," he said. Without getting into the debate about whether Jesus actually declared all foods clean or not -- I believe he did -- I reminded him of his promise
to listen more and stop promoting his teaching. He looked at me and said, "Always learning and never coming to the truth." So, yeah, we kicked him out. Turns out he'd been making his way around area churches and ours was just the latest he was trying to convert to his teaching.
In any event, when you're evangelizing in our world, you will inevitably end up in discussions with people who ask questions -- or make arguments -- about biblical "contradictions" related to dietary laws, etc . . .
e.g. "Why do you believe homosexuality is a sin but wear shirts with blended cloth?" If you think a post on a subject like eating blood is dumb or irrelevant, you need to get out more. Or if you just enjoy harping on TGC because it's TGC, well . . . you need to get out more. /end
