In the US, the hysteria happens through the "invisible hand" of personal incentives, not Politburo orders.
Under communism, the Politburo would decide country X is bad from today on & you would then have to find out or invent whatever bad things X is doing.

In the US, it's the incentives. If you are a young journalist today, it's a great idea to write about Uighurs. You can suddenly start searching the Web, talk to people who "know", find credible or incredible stories nobody will contradict & soon you have a great article published

You are a famous writer and an expert.
Spending as much effort on figuring out the war in Yemen for example is a waste of time. Nobody cares and nobody will publish it.
So what do you do?
