#Neurodiversity is a powerful tool for equity and inclusion! 🌈🧠

My brain likes images, so I made this flow chart to help explain why: (1/5)
First, a definition: “neurodiversity” refers to the natural variation in human neurocognitive function. It’s not an opinion, but a fact. And it’s backed by decades of neuroscience research (2/5)
The neurodiversity paradigm builds off this scientific literature, asserting that within this spectrum of neurocogntive ability, there is no one “right” way for a brain to function (3/5)
Instead, ideal neurocogntive function has been socially constructed by those with power throughout history. This power imbalance has led to entrenched inequities for individuals with intellectual, developmental, learning, and psychiatric disabilities (4/5)
To combat these inequities, the neurodiversity movement was created. It champions civil rights, equality, and inclusion for all people - regardless of their neurocogntive functioning (5/5)
I’m so grateful to have led a session on neurodiversity for my classmates @harvardmed today, and to have shared the stage with some amazing advocates with epilepsy and autism, who shared their own perspectives. No neurology class is complete without neurodiversity! (6/5 oops)
