*taps mike* This is on, right?
Ahem.
Begin thread.
I am proud to moderate this panel with @annclezotte (SHOW ME A SIGN) and @LynneKelly (SONG FOR A WHALE) with ASL interpreter @Handwriterink. We discuss *so* much stuff, such as the importance of representation, the need for #ownvoices, and craft!
Why is this panel so important? Glad you asked.
Despite recent efforts to diversify collections, readers seeking D/deaf, Hard of Hearing, or Deaf-Blind #ownvoices are unlikely to find many offerings. Why? The answer is complex. @annclezotte explains here. https://www.slj.com/?detailStory=read-the-signs-deaf-experience

This panel will have visual description, ASL interpretation, and open captions, because the panelists believe #accessibilitymatters. #ADA30
Not only will this panel be accessible, it will be lively! And entertaining! And we will discuss two books that you NEED TO READ!
Have you read them yet? If not, do it. I mean, like, RIGHT NOW.
I'll wait ...

SONG FOR A WHALE by @LynneKelly is the story of Iris, 12, who develops a unique connection with Blue 55, a whale who can't communicate with his species. Iris, who is deaf, understands what that's like.

In SHOW ME A SIGN by @annclezotte, Mary lives in a Deaf community on Martha's Vineyard in the years following the Revolution. Mary doesn't realize her community is unusual until they're visited by an outsider who wants to "study" them.
Val has more.
Val has more.
The panel will discuss: incorporating ASL into children's literature; common misconceptions about the d/Deaf and HoH communities; the inspiration for the authors' novels; and why it's so important to have more #ownvoices writing these stories.
Shall I show the panel information again? Of course I shall. I mean, look how cute we are! Especially that little one with the book, AMIRITE? (That bracelet doubled as a pen, jsyk).
We hope to see you there. This topic is incredibly important. All voices deserve to be heard. All children deserve to live in accessible world. Conversations like this bring us one step closer -- and one step closer is always better than one step back.
- Erin.
