{ #Thread 1/7} Murray Sinclair was born in 1951 near Selkirk, Manitoba, an area known until 1907 as the St. Peter’s Reserve, when most of its Ojibwa and Cree people were forced to relocate to what is now the Peguis First Nation.
A bright student, Sinclair graduated
{2/7} from high school as the class valedictorian. Soon after enrolling in university, he returned home to care for his ill grandmother. This decision ultimately led him to apply to the @umanitoba Faculty of Law, from which he graduated in 1979 and received the prestigious
{3/7} A.J. Christie Prize in Civil Litigation.
Called to the Bar in 1980, Sinclair became #Manitoba’s first, and #Canada’s second #Indigenous judge in 1988. Admired by #community and #peers, his knowledge and ability to #fairly balance the Canadian legal system and the
{4/7} traditional teachings of the Indigenous peoples were some of his trademarks.
Whether leading the @MBGov to re-evaluate how it treated Indigenous peoples or #teaching himself about pediatric heart surgery so he could bring #justice to mourning families in the
{5/7} Pediatric Cardiac Surgery Inquiry, his #career was dedicated to giving a voice to the voiceless.
In 2009, Judge Sinclair was appointed as Chair of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, created to tell the history of residential schools and to play a vital role in
{6/7} the #reconciliation between Indigenous peoples, the churches and the federal government.
Sinclair became the nation’s 16th Indigenous Senator in 2016, and remains devoted to #IndigenousRights and to a collective #healing, saying:
{7/7} “It’s not simply about confronting, it’s also about assisting.”
His remarkable contributions to #equality and #SocialJustice are the perfect metaphor proving that for Murray Sinclair, the sky truly is the limit. #indigenoushistorymonth #TogetherWeCan #DiversityandInclusion
