I started a #newjob in #NHScomms five weeks ago.

For anyone starting a brand new role from home in this crazy #COVID world, here’s some stuff I learned from my first few days.

Thread ⬇️
There’s no ‘driving-to-work-for-my-first-day-nerves’ because your first day basically consists of you walking and sitting somewhere in your own house.

Yeah, that’s gonna feel weird. But embrace it, you’ve still #arrived.
Once you’ve ‘got to work’ you may need to set up IT equipment that’s just turned up at your door.

Unless you work in IT this is vaguely #terrifying & will feel like some kind of escape room challenge.

Note: I failed said challenge royally, but the IT helpdesk was *great* 👌
You’ll then start video calls & saying “nice to meet you” a lot, kinda like a regular first day.

What’s not like a regular first day is that no matter HOW HARD you try not to, you’re gonna #wave when you say goodbye to everyone 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sorry, this is just who you are now. 👋
You’re going to get reeeeeeeal aquainted with MS Teams.

Hands up, mute, chat box, hilarious backgrounds - you’ll do it all, you total #Teamswizard
You will figure a lot of stuff out on your own because you can’t just turn around and lazily ask someone sat next to you.

But that’s *good* - it’s going to make you get your feet under the table and feel confident faster.
#Videocall people as much as you can.

Clearly no one likes looking at themselves staring intently into a webcam like this owl, but it’s the best way of meeting people right now. Don’t be a disembodied voice for three months.

(Plus you get to wave at them that way 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️)
You’re not going to know how tall your closest team-mates are, what their legs look like, or even how they look in 3D.

But they will #welcome you to their 2D fold with open arms anyway, so don’t worry about not bonding with them.

Mine were, & are, ACE.
You’re also going to get acquainted with them way more quickly than you would in an office, and it’s actually really nice.

“Oh hello [insert child name]”

“Oh hello [insert cat name]”

“Oh hello [insert distant family member who has moved in name]”
And before you know it, you’ll be weeks in and suddenly realise that you’re just rolling on with ‘new job stuff’ with no #drama.

#dramallama
So go be. Go ace it. Go #nail your new job.

And don’t forget to wave.
