What does it mean for bikes, people, and city living when cars come off the streets? A thread
[1/6]

In partnership with @CoordCity, we analyzed the space that Citi Bike uses on NYC streets. We found that our stations account for less than 0.5% of the total curb space. [2/6]
. @regionalplan also found that space for motor vehicles often occupies more than 75% of street space [3/6]
There are over 3 million parking spaces in NYC, and 97% of those spaces are free. Consider this: if we replaced those parking spots, we’d have space across the city for 12 Central Parks. [4/6]
Studies also suggest that the avg car using parking only makes 2.5 trips per day—95% of the time they remain parked. Meanwhile, the avg Citi Bike station accommodates 27 bike trips per parking spot per day. https://twitter.com/ohlukeson/status/879355476206641153

We’re inspired by the countless articles calling for “streets for people” like the @nytimes reimagining NYC with fewer cars. Think of the possibilities if some of that 75% of space dedicated to cars were given to restaurants, bikes, pedestrians
