Background on Aliso Canyon (thread): #AlisoCanyon is the 4th largest gas storage facility in the US. It's owned and operated by SoCalGas, the largest gas utility in the US. On Oct. 23, 2015, well SS-25 blew out lasting 111 days.

@GavinNewsom #ShutAlisoDown #StopAlisoWithdrawals
This climate wrecking, life taking, SoCalGas disaster is the worse gas blowout in U.S. history. We are coming up on the 5 yr anniversary of the #AlisoCanyon gas blowout, so let's remember why it's so significant and why we need @CAgovernor to #ShutAlisoDown #StopAlisoWithdrawals
SoCalGas failed to notify the community for 3 days and failed basic emergency response protocol. SoCalGas ignored industry best practices and failed to calculate the proper technique required to “kill” the gas blowout, making the situation much worse.
If SoCalGas did the well "kill attempts” right it would've lasted days, not 4 months & would've resulted in fewer deaths. The Root Cause Analysis says SCG NEVER conducted risk assessments of their wells, never investigated well failures at #AlisoCanyon
SoCalGas NEVER conducted the proper analysis for "kill attempts" until it was too risky (the well was already so abused it, more attempts could make it worse). This lead SoCalGas to drill a relief well to intercept SS-25 to plug the blowout. See #AlisoCanyon root cause vid above.
Meanwhile, SoCalGas PR employees went to work covering up the largest climate and public health disaster since the B.P. Oil Spill. SCG repeatedly said health problems were only a minor annoyance and would not cause long-term problems. So, why was the gas blowout so devastating?
Oily mist, benzene, formaldehyde, uranium, carbon monixide, nitrogen oxide, VOCs and particulate matter. AQMD annual reports show #AlisoCanyon annually emits tons of these toxins, which can lead to death or cancer. https://xappprod.aqmd.gov/find//facility/AQMDsearch?facilityID=800128
Oily mist bc #AlisoCanyon is located at the old Getty Oil Field. Oily mist mixes with the gas in the reservoir and is normally separated from the gas before transmitted in pipelines.

P.S. @AileenGettyFdn has fought with us on the frontlines to #ShutAlisoDown.

During the #AlisoCanyon blowout, oily mist and particulate matter shot out of the ruptured well and sprayed down over the nearby community for months. Pictures from a closed playground in Porter Ranch show how prolific this was. People were breathing this in. 😷😵
#AlisoCanyon wasn't just health crisis but also a climate catastrophe. The threat to climate cannot be understated. The blowout accounted for 1/4 of CA's methane emissions for the yr, releasing 109,000 metric tons of methane. More reason to #ShutAlisoDown https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/sites/default/files/2020-07/aliso_canyon_methane_emissions-arb_final.pdf
"Methane's lifetime in the atmosphere is much shorter than carbon dioxide (CO2), but CH4 is more efficient at trapping radiation than CO2. Pound for pound, the comparative impact of CH4 is 25 times greater than CO2 over a 100-year period." #ShutAlisoDown https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/overview-greenhouse-gases
So #AlisoCanyon is a public health crisis and climate emergency. Still, @CAgovernor @GavinNewsom has failed to keep his promise to #ShutAlisoDown. If he needs more reasons, let's get into it. First, let's talk about FIRE 🔥. Last Oct. the Saddleridge fire blazed through Aliso.
30,000 people were evacuated during this fire alone. Fire trucks were onsite at #AlisoCanyon to protect the facility from exploding!💥 Mysterious fires burned at Aliso Canyon long after the fire was put out. Health issues spiked.
A Seismic Study on the fault line at #AlisoCanyon confirmed this.

Faults ➔ Earthquakes ➔ Well Damage ➔ Blowouts ➔ Gas Flow

Worse case scenario can lead to a blowout 8x greater than 2015 blowout!

Study says mitigations measures put in place by CPUC work including better balancing of gas imports via out-of-state pipelines to match supply and demand w/in 5%. But CPUC went back on these measures to benefit SoCalGas. #StopAlisoWithdrawals @GavinNewsom https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2-3RgMg5wGCaTF0UTloQTJmSEU/view?usp=sharing
Instead of move swiftly to #ShutAlisoDown, @CAgovernor @GavinNewsom allowed SoCalGas to ramp up Aliso Canyon withdrawals by 3000% with no justification! He feigns not to have responsibility but he has the power to close it! His actions to shut down CA because of COVID are proof.
If @CAgovernor @GavinNewsom can close CA down for a public health emergency w/ COVID, he can surely use his power to #ShutAlisoDown. Even more so if he declares a #ClimateEmergency. Is he failing to act because he took $32K from Sempra/SoCalGas? https://www.followthemoney.org/show-me?dt=1&c-t-eid=312332&d-eid=2344
. @GavinNewsom must keep his word to #ShutAlisoDown and expedite it! Pathways to close Aliso are simple. #StopAlisoWithdrawals by reverting to the original withdrawal protocol. Reinstate tight balancing rules first ordered by the CPUC. Aggressively pursue more clean energy, EE, DR
This fight matters for California and the US. #AlisoCanyon is 1 of 13 gas storage facilities in CA, and 1 of 410 in the nation. Shutting down major gas infrastructure in Los Angeles will show the pathway for getting off gas and fossil fuels for the world. https://www.eia.gov/naturalgas/ngqs/#?report=RP7&year1=&year2=&company=&sortby=&items=
SIGN THE PETITION and tell Newsom to #StopAlisoWithdrawals and #ShutAlisoDown. https://fwaction.us/shut-it-down

The dire health effects of more withdrawals from #AlisoCanyon are scary. Families are made sicker by the 3000% increase in use since @CAGovernor @GavinNewsom took office.
