I showed my 5yo this puzzle shared by @Tony_Mann in his @SHUmaths recreational maths seminar this morning, attributed to Celia Hoyles.

I expected, with only one COVID-interrupted year of school in Recetion class, he wouldn’t have the preconditioning to do what students are reported as doing: picking out 24 and 17 and adding them together despite the nonsense of such a move. #tmwyk 2/4
He read it and then asked me “What’s 24 plus 17?”
I asked “Is that what you need to work out?”
“Yes because I’ve noticed that’s how old the ship’s captain is.”
So he worked it out using an #explodingdots machine and got an answer, telling me the captain is 41.

I asked “What do the cows and ducks have to do with it?”
“Well, you need something to add up to know the answer and they are there to be added up. I’ve just noticed this captain must be a farmer!”
