I need to make one thing clear. If all of the panelists on a panel are male, it's a #manel It doesn't matter if a women is moderator -- it's still a manel. Having a woman do the moderating "housekeeping" of a session, and thinking it qualifies as inclusion is wrong & insulting.
Fellow men, don't get confused! Having a token women serve as a moderator is not a solution to avoiding a #manel. If you're asked to serve on a manel, refuse until the organizers fix the problem. If you're told there are no women experts, go find them one. I guarantee they exist.
I just saw a #manel on the topic of democracy in an age of social media. All of the expert panelists were male. There are so many experts on this topic who are women that it is malpractice to not include at least one. How can I take panel that excludes them seriously??
Fellow men, I want to let you know that if you're on a #manel, I'm going to hold you responsible even if you didn't organize the session. It's our job as men to make sure manels don't keep happening.
I want to make it clear that the panel I'm referencing was NOT a RightsCon panel. RightsCon has a clear anti-manel policy. There have still be some issues from what I understand, but in my experience AccessNow understand the problem and is actively trying to prevent manels.
