Let’s talk a little bit about our new, potential starboy.

Alfie Devine.

Released from Liverpool’s academy at 11 and swiftly picked up by Wigan Athletic; Devine changed his game from being a striker to a technically gifted, high energy, ‘all-action midfielder’ with good final third vision.

We’ve seen a lot of “yeah but improve the first team”, “youth is all well and good but we need upgrades, not prospects” chat since this first came to light.

Here’s the thing....you can do both!
We have many positions that need attention, no doubt. Fullback, DM, back up ST at an absolute minimum.

But you’ve seen the pain when Arsenal fans tweet about missing out on CR7.

Didn’t sign Yaya Toure after a trial.

And of course Zlatan, who doesn’t do trials.
We don’t always get it right with our recruitment policy, but you may be surprised to know about who we’ve missed out on for moving too slowly.
We were sniffing at Ethan Ampadu before he made his Exeter City debut at 15, Chelsea pounced.

Our scouts were all over Upamecano after the U17 Euros but we lost out to Red Bull (Salzburg & Leipzig) for just under £2m.

(We were probably none of many but) if Mbappé hadn’t gentlemanly agreed to sign a pro contract at Monaco? A compensation fee of £450K could have made things very different.
Admittedly, we’re still waiting on thede 4 to blow

Parrott (18) - signed at 15.
Solberg (17) - signed at 15.
Yago Santiago (17) - signed at 16.
Kion Etete (18) - signed at 17

However, Alfie has more of a national buzz than any of these 4 had before signing.
We barely know anything about the boy besides him being a midfielder, what we do know is:

- U18 ball at 14
- U23 ball at 15
- won Player of the Tournament at the SportChain Tournament for England U16 (whilst being one of the youngest players in it’s entirety)

Again, players who can play NOW are paramount.

But when that kind of obvious talent is available at £500K? It’s always best to move swiftly rather than say “ah we could have for him”, 10 years later.
Not a lot of clubs get it right and buying youth prospects is always a gamble.

But when it works, oh it works.
I hereby invest my stocks in our future Starboy.

Alfie Devine.
