Lemme tell you a story:
I went to Korea to visit family last year and ended up getting a small cold.
My mom insisted we go to the clinic and I was mortified. I started counting my travel money, asking if they would take a travel credit card for expenses (1/7) https://twitter.com/bdavewalters/status/1287997701909385216

She asked why and I said to cover the cost of the visit since my current insurance wouldn’t cover international stuff surely. She looked me straight in the eyes and said “this isn’t America” and dragged my stunned ass to the clinic (2/7)
After getting checked, I was prescribed some medicine (like ibuprofen but a little stronger). The pharmacist asked if I was a citizen and y’all...I felt my stomach drop so quick I considered mentioning I was now nauseous. (3/7)
My mother answered for me and said no. The pharmacist said “ah! I’m sorry, since you’re not a citizen it’s going to be 8,000won ($8.00 USD)
I stared at her as ask how much total with the visit and she looked at me like I was insane. She said it was free. (4/7)

So then I asked how much would the medicine cost if I was a citizen and she is 5,000won ($5.00 USD)
5
Fucking
Dollars
For the entire visit!!!! (5/7)

I was so stunned I couldn’t do anything. My mom quickly paid and told me to pull myself together as we received more than enough medicine
As we walked back to our hotel, my mom repeated what she said before: This isn’t America

My mother is native born Korean. Married my father and moved to the US. She’s adapted and lived in America through all the ups and downs.
Yet I feel like no more powerful words were spoken to me except those words and how much they represent the current situation of the country.

I just told my mom about this tweet and she corrected me
We actually paid $13 USD
$8.00 would have been citizen rate.
I still would gladly pay $13.00 overall with no strings attached.
I could afford being sick overseas...but not in my home country...
