As I see what's currently taking place around powerful Indigenous men being accused of abuse I can't help but remember the way in which holding Wab Kinew accountable for his violence against women had such a brief shelf life. How his victim was attacked and gaslit
And then I'm reminded of the Indigenous prof who taught at my university who also was abusive to his partner. The way that too was brushed under the rug. How his books were still taught in classrooms. Who's book are ARE still probably being taught in classrooms
Which then brings me to my own abuse at the hands of an Indigenous man. How things like generational trauma and the current state of oppression justified his actions. How his healing was prioritized over my own. How our mens healing is always prioritized over our own
Powerful Indigenous men continuously get the benefit of the doubt, continuously are given the space to grow. Often times when we discuss restorative justice it is centered around their restoration and not the restoration of their victims.
