Since 2003, some #Eritrea|n movements have sought lessons from the Serbian Revolution of 2000, more specifically, with regards to Non-violent Resistance strategy employed by anti-government youth movement, Otpor. It's important we understand the differences between both cases
2/8
Like #Yiakl, Otpor's principal aim was to topple the Serbian administration and institute a transparent democracy. Learning from previous failures, Otpor realized they needed effective organisation (strategy, planning, recruiting) for a sustained fight.
3/8
But its key we understand the unique peculiarites of the Serbian revolution & NVR strategy.

Firstly, Otpor were less restricted operating INSIDE Serbia in comparison to #Yiakl, where much of the resistance is currently projected from the diaspora.
4/8
Secondly, unlike #Eritrea, Serbia actually had elections which Otpor sought to influence. Serbia also had established opposition political parties inside the country (unlike Eritrea). It was actually the electoral system which led to the eventual downfall of Milosevic.
5/8
In addition to the youth movement, to unify the opposition, eighteen opposition political parties in Serbia united to form the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS), which subsequently formed a new Government in late 2000 (after much drama!).
6/8
Whilst #Eritrea|n political parties don't have the privilege to challenge Isaias via the ballot box, by unity, they can demonstrate to the Eritrean public, that #Eritrea has capable leaders in waiting. This in itself is a massive psychological boost for those resisting.
7/8
Like Otpor, the #Yiakl Movement is doing a good job galvanizing opposition to the dictatorship of #Eritrea. Likewise, this energy needs to be mirrored and translated into a unifying narrative at the political level

Our strategy must also address the peculiarities of our case
8/8 Nothing above is intended to advocate for or against NVR as a principal strategy for the Movement. It's simply pointing out that lessons learnt from other countries need to be adapted to our cause.
