Hey Fam, we are doing one more fundraiser for a Black Disabled Girl Recovering from Incarceration. This story is related to Grace's-the Black girl in Michigan who was incarcerated for not doing her homework. 1/
But it is literally the reason Grace was held in violation of her probation: not doing homework & getting up late for class are, in fact, resulting from her disability where losing track of details and impacted sleep patterns are often part of ADHD. 3/
Being a Black disabled girl means her behaviors are read as threatening-Black people & Disabled people are often read as threatening. Black disabled girls are restricted from whiteness & therefore innocence & ability. Do not erase Grace's disability in efforts to #FreeGrace 4/
There are thousands of Grace's across the country-many of these girls are Black AND disabled. They are criminalized, often in schools, for behaviors associated with a disability & read as threatening as a result of white supremacy, ableism & misogynoir 5/ https://medium.com/verve-up/feminist-facts-what-is-misogynoir-5392c29d6aab
Black disabled girls are then incarcerated, which exacerbates mental health & other disability issues-all while receiving services that focus on fixing the damages within them (ableism) while ignoring the context of their lives & criminalization (misogynoir & white supremacy) 6/
This is why I talk about Recovering from Incarceration-incarceration is a violent act for all people & especially for Black disabled girls in particular. They are subjected to racial and sexual violence in youth prisons rooted in fixing their deficits & ignoring their needs 7/
The Black Disabled Girl we are supporting today has ADHD, depression & bipolar disorder. Those needs were not supported or addressed in prison. They were simply exacerbated & targeted for further criminalization. 8/
Let's help her get on her feet so she can feel cared for and supported by her community. Goal: $1100: rent (400), license (150), clothes (200), other survival supplies (200), paying back money she's borrowed to survive (150). If we raise more than that, she gets a cushion 9/
Luckily, Jyleesa is helping me with this fundraiser as managing all these details has become a lot & she's amazing. fundraiser ends Tuesday, August 4th, but the sooner that we can raise this money, the sooner she can get a safe place to live 10/
