Gonna go ahead and make a list of things I think the US should do to respond to China, as it comes up a lot and I don't want to be misinterpreted.
1. Immediately provide long-term residency visa with a pathway to permanency and citizenship for any Hong Konger who 1) can pass the English language component of the citizenship exam 2) denounce the CCP on record. Include their children and parents as well, with no reqs for them
2. Set a minimum quota target for efugees admitted from China of 25,000 per year, encourage state department to actively seek out and find suitable candidates. Prioritize working-age individuals.
3. Deny entrance into the US of any CCP member, their children, parents, spouses, siblings, and in-laws, except if they receive a newly-created visa category for certain essential business. To receive that visa, they consent to a monitoring app on their phone and computer.
4. Prohibit any firm from selling any software or application to US customers if it has any of its coding work for any product performed within China.
5. Prohibit any company with more than 25% of its employment or fixed capital located within China, or more than 50% of its total sales coming from customers within China, from being listed on any US stock exchange.
6. Increase funding for tax auditing for individuals with over $1,000,000 in income by an order of magnitude. Increase funding for international investigations related to bribery and corruption by *two* orders of magnitude.
7. Increase international aid given to pro-democracy NGOs in Africa and Latin America by an order of magnitude.
8. Establish a fast-track program to assist successful African businesses in getting customs clearance to export to the US and list on US exchanges.
9. Seize all assets and properties held by any members of the CCP, or firms at which more than 75% of board members are members of the CCP, or the children or spouses of CCP members. Give these assets to the HK and Chinese people allowed in in #1 and #2.
10. Massively increase spending on missile defense, precision-guided missiles, and get Israel to help Taiwan Iron-Dome-ify itself.
11. Increase procurement of electronic warfare technologies.
12. Reconsider all the ultra-costly "billion dollar glass house" procurements of the navy and airforce. Encourage the development of weapons platforms which can "take a hit." Develop strategies and doctrines which assume higher casualties.
(that is, force the armed forces to prepare for the possibility of an *extended* conventional war)
13. We should ask Taiwan if they would like us to establish a permanent naval base and if they would like it, do it. The agreement should be marked by a Presidental visit in Taiwan.
(the US used to have military bases in Taiwan, we still sell them hardware, and we still maintain US military personnel related to that hardware in Taiwan) https://twitter.com/Skeoghb/status/1288152068583239682
14. Get back into TPP how dumb was it to pull out of that, seriously.
15. Expand forward deployment in Korea.
16. Joint South China Sea patrols with any country in the region that wants to do it.
17. Publicly state that US defense commitments to Japan include the Senkaku islands as long as Japan claims them, and post some fighters close enough to jointly scramble with Japan on China's next air challenge.
18. Do literally everything we can imagine to woo India.
19. Ban any US athlete from participating in any sporting event, demonstration, or exhibition held in China.
20. Most importantly: Binding statehood referendum for Puerto Rico. Reform qualified immunity. Remove stupid obstacles to voting. Expand the house. Enhance legal protections for freedom of speech, press, assembly, and religious exercise. Be the America that can inspire the world.
Okay now some things I think we should NOT do:
1. Expel the Chinese diplomatic delegation or close tons of consulates willy-nilly. Forcing a reduction may be fine. But we do need to maintain formal diplomatic ties.
2. Categorically ban Chinese students from higher ed. The CCP+family ban is plenty. We should be clear that we don't have a beef with random aspirational Chinese kids.
Reminder, I'm now listing things we should NOT do.

3. Attempt to provide any material arms or aid to ethnic minorities in Tibet, Hong Kong, Xinjiang. In fact we should be abundantly clear that we have absolutely no intention to intervene or interfere in China's domestic affairs.
4. Engage in any determined propaganda campaign within China. Let China be China. It's not our business. We're not their bosses. They can do what they want. No need to try to persuade them to become Americans.
5. Try to make any big moves on Korea. We should just accept the status quo there. Trying for any big resolution on Korea is just inviting instability and uncertainty, and in particularly will ignite Chinese territorial worries. Just leave the buffer in place.
6. Adopt a strategy of "economic nationalism" to compete with China. What we need to do is try to use our economic weight to orient a lot of the countries in the region away from China, "Buy America" doesn't achieve that.
7. Stoke anti-Chinese ethnic paranoia. Again folks, BE THE AMERICA WE OUGHT TO BE. Research confirms that anti-Chinese racism pushes Chinese visitors and students towards a more pro-CCP position. We need to be actively and intentionally ethnically pluralist if we want to win.
8. Use our alliance network primarily as a marketing strategy for our overpriced defense contractors. i.e. maybe it's time to admit a bunch of our fancy new projects were wasteful and there's no compelling reason for our allies to buy them.
9. Militarily contest China's expansion of power into Africa and Latin America. Rather, we should focus on good government, anti-corruption, and facilitating democracy. Be the good guys and let China spend billions bribing loathed autocrats.
(and then when they deposit their money in a bank we're monitoring, seize it and use it to build missiles to defend Taiwan)
10. Don't turn into an awful country. Don't turn into a paranoid, insular, isolationist, polarized, embittered has-been of a democracy. Welcome immigrants! Have babies! Enjoy a thriving market economy! Support robust civic institutions!
