The scandalous part of government pay isn't even the salaries. They're large, yes. It's a tough job.

The scandal is the expenses. Extra expenses for all the things the rest of us have to pay out of our actual salaries.

Expenses for travel, for parking, for clothes and cleaning
I don't get special expenses for parking. I don't get money towards my clothes. I have to eat those expenses as part of life because they are associated with my job.

Why does someone getting paid 6 figures need tens of thousands more to pay for parking? Get a bus taxsaver ticket
Parking in Dublin is expensive, I'll grant you, but I do not get an extra 60 grand a year to cover it. I'm expected to make it work.

So should they. There is no good reason to have these extra expenses.
Being able to just eschew these daily expenses as if you are exempt from them is a huge privilege, and it's why we have government ministers who think people can survive on a pittance - they spend nothing because everything is an expense.
Think of the money a person would save by never paying for parking, for transport, for food, for clothing, etc. Think of the impact this would have for someone on a salary of 35k for example?

The expenses are routinely more than the average salary just by themselves.
I just do not understand why anyone needs an allowance or a special magic topup or a laundry list of expenses when they are already earning such a substantial salary, and the explanations seem to be "just because".

Pay for your own damn parking. You earn more than enough to.
