Thread on the comprehensive manufacturing and distribution plan released this morn from @amprog @TopherSpiro and @ZekeEmanuel. It is everything you need to know about what lies ahead. A vaccine never saved a life; only a vaccination has. Some key points: 1/ https://twitter.com/topherspiro/status/1288082274416832523
A)This seems overwhelming. But the only way to get order to the chaos is through this kind of gap planning. It’s actually calming: what will we need, what do we have, and how do we fill that gap. A needs assessment is the only way to move forward. 2/
B)The gaps are wide but they are known. That too is good. There are also separate ethical issues related to distribution order but some already set (first responders first!). This plan is about the how and it builds off planning from H1N1 and capacity at local and state level. 3/
C)significantly, a vaccine distribution plan is rolling. We don’t wait for full manufacture to start distribution. There is a start but it will come in waves. 4/
D)manufacturing will include not just the vaccine but brewing equipment and other related needs (refrigeration). There are 4 existing facilities that can manage now; at full capacity they should be at 50million doses. 5/
E)where’s the gap? We will need 2 new manufacturing facilities, argue the authors. That seems correct. 6/
F)Strong focus on utilizing present powers including invoking the #defenseproductionact DPA and engaging private sector for better tracking system. 7/
G)most significantly, we will need 7300 community vaccination clinics, known as PODS in #logistics lingo for points of distribution. This is the moment the bulk aspects of manufacture and supply chain meet the intimacy of your arm! This is a local function. 8/
H)financial support for WHO will be part of a strong global vaccination program. It’s obvious why: a pandemic knows no borders. We must support others so the world is protected. 9/
I)Finally, we need to focus now on a anti-vaccine reluctancy campaign. It’s more than reluctancy. We have a big problem: anti-Vaxxers, Russia disinformation, and lack of trust. I am unforgiving in this regard but we need more forgiving efforts to engage public. 10/
J)This effort by Center for American is terrific. The Trump Administration fired their head vaccination distribution expert, Rick Bright. The WH consistently says they have a plan and gives lots of air time to the military. 11/
K)that’s not an answer. There is no transparency. The military can’t solve all these issues, including the last mile of distribution which is very personal. So here’s a start. The needs are knowable. It is calming. Execution? Well, vote accordingly. 12/12
