You are so grossly off base, I was just going to let you flap in the breeze. But you won’t stop. Let me see if I can help. https://twitter.com/AmericanMillen1/status/1287954071157186562
Teachers aren’t asking to not teach. Teachers in many places are asking to start the year remotely until plans can effectively be put in place to ensure the safety of students and staff. So maybe 2-6 weeks.
It’s kind of like how my PCP and dermatologist went to strictly telemedicine until they could set up their waiting rooms, etc, in a new way.
Where it’s different is medicinal professionals chose a profession that exposes them to illness. They do their jobs knowing that risk. Where did I get this perspective? My PCP shared it with me on my last visit to see him.
Essential workers in the medical field had a terrible go with COVID in the beginning. It was devastating and cruel. Many people—myself included—vocalized how wrong it was. We spoke up, we sent meals.
My school? We used our 3D printer to make PPE for our local hospital. A dozen of our students go involved. They crowdsourced the money from—you guessed it—teachers.
As for other essential workers who have worked through this whole pandemic. Has the public mistreated them? In many cases. Have their employers provided more protection to them than most schools have access to? In many cases.
People have told me to think of the workers at Walmart. I don’t shop there so I can’t know for certain. But I’m fairly confident they don’t spend 8 hours a day zipping flys on customers plants or wiping noses.
They also probably don’t tie shoes, open GoGurts, offer Kleenex to kids who are in the middle of breakups, or hug a kid who collapses when they get the word that a parent isn’t coming home.
It’s an apples and astronauts comparison, and you’re not qualified to make it. Clearly.
Your position that this is weeding our bad teachers is just plan wrong. Anyone who feels unsafe is going to leave. People who feel unsafe and choose to stay anyway aren’t BETTER. No teacher needs to make themselves into a martyr.
It’s been implied by the misinformed public for far too long. Anyone who feels unsafe or undervalued has the right to work elsewhere. So that’s what you’re seeing.
And for someone to sit back and decide that this is a way for the profession to cleanse itself of rotten eggs really says all that anyone needs to know about you.
