But as mentioned above, even in my book from the year 2000, there are ways to tune STP so you are not blocking ports to virtual chassis on the new cat 9ks.

To be fair the text outlines legitimate reasons to prefer routed vs switched...I just don’t think you’d see STP blocked ports of layer 2 is tuned as depicted in the figure...
