If the conversation about healthy eating has taught us anything, it’s that far too many people still don’t have the slightest idea of what being poor is actually like
I don’t have the energy to explain what it was to grow up skint. What I will say is (1) there is no single version of poverty, and (2) it is so, so much more than income. It’s a thousand social and psychological forces compounded by economic realities and it doesn’t shift easily.
Please please please listen to people who have lived poverty. Give them platforms instead of letting middle class columnists and TV chefs run the narrative with tepid, surface-level takes. Any discussion on this topic that excludes that perspective is an absolute waste of time.
