*Arsenal's 3-4-3 system analysis* (a thread)

Arteta has always preferred 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 system when he first arrived but after the defeat against Brighton he switched to a back 3 and the results have been very good since that change.

Let's see what Arteta does. (1)
1. Why the change

Arsenal's poor defensive record and the regularity of errors by the defence is the main reason Arteta switched to this. David Luiz also has the reputation of playing really well in a back 3.

They also lack attcaking midfielders who can create chances.(2)
2. How they play

• Off the ball
Arsenal's movement off the ball has been very good since the change. Lacazatte drops deep to mark the deepest midfielder of the opposition if they play in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
The below image shows how Arsenal approach the game off the ball.(3)
In case if the opposition matches Arsenal's 3 at the back, the three forwards mark the centre backs and one of the two midfielders(usually Xhaka) presses the deep lying midfielder and the other one(Cabellos) stays back.
The below image shows this
(Cabellos, Xhaka - red zone)(4)
• On the ball
Arsenal try to play out from the back and when the Goal Keeper has the ball they tend to form a 4-2-2-2 structure with the centre backs moving wide and the wing backs moving forward.
Either one of the midfielders drop in with the CB in order to provide (cont.) (5)
numerical advantage. The below image shows the 4-2-2-2 structure (the image is shown if the ball is moved towards the left hand side and if it attack starts from the right the same happens)

This has been a key component of Arsenal's on the ball movement. (6)
If Arsenal struggle to play out from the back or if the team they are up against is strong in possession they also tend to counter a lot.
In this case they sit back and use the pace of their forwards.
David Luiz is also a very good long passer and can ping one to forwards. (7)
The first goal against Man City in the FA Cup is a great example of how Arsenal combine the 4-2-2-2 structure and how the midfielders drop deep to create numerical overload.

The Video shows how they exploited City by creating a 4v3 situation and a 3v2 situation in the left. (8)
Conclusion

Arteta has instilled a positive attitude which has increased the work rate and the morale of the players. The structure that Arteta has implemented has also improved Arsenal's result.

With one or two key signings, Arsenal can compete for the top 4(9)
