How did I get into Bitcoin? Thread:

My first job after a lackluster Minor League career was working for a dude worth a hundred million dollars

At 23 years old he flew me around in private jets and explained how the world worked

He was a conspiracy theorist
He believed corporations, particularly banks, controlled governments, and that the news was fake

This was 2010

I met him in LA and he looked at me while driving

His pupils were the size of pinheads

Without emotion, he said “You’re gonna see tent cities everywhere.”
I thought he was crazy

But I knew he had the financial success I wanted so I listened

Working for him, I researched why wars really happened (frequently to appease Wall Street & the ownership class)

That everything I learned in school was a lie
I moved to Hong Kong for the job & saw wealth inequality I had never seen before

Ferraris were as common there as BMWs were here

Right next to $600K Maybachs, you’d see people pushing baskets up the street for a few $ per hour

Many lived in cages, stuck in a cycle of poverty
In HK, minimum wage was only recently inacted and unionization was illegal

All while a cartel controlled real estate in the most expensive market in the world

Some families were so poor, they would abandon kids with any physical deformity

They needed kids to take care of them
The abandoned kids would lie on the street, sometimes limbless begging for money

On the same block as Louis Vuitton shops

Struggling to mKe sense of this inequality, I eventually determined it was due to “differing rules of trade”
Then I asked myself, is the US likely to become closer to or further from Hong Kong in wealth inequality

I believed closer

We also believed the Fed would keep interest rates low forever as a subsidy to bankrupt banks

This meant speculative assets would explode in valuation
So I thought this easy money policy would flood Silicon Valley with capital

I moved back hoping to make money with the wind at my back

Wearing my custom tailored suit from HK, I basicallly elevator pitched my way into a sales job at Google
Every year there, my income rose as the stock price climbed

I was making 6 figures and the company skewed Libertarian

But times they were a changin

Identity politics was coming en vogue and many principals that the company was founded on were becoming abandoned
When Trump was elected the office felt like a morgue

Our team meeting the Wednesday after was repurposed to discuss everyone’s feelings

By 2017 they fired @JamesADamore for writing a memo that basically restated the couple hundred hours of @jordanbpeterson vids I saw that year
This was also the year crypto became mainstream

While I didn’t fet into crypto “early” I understood the narrative

I understood that trust in dishonest institutions was waning

I saw crypto as a new path

So I quit my 6 figure job @ Google in March, 2018 without another lined up
My friend from Hong Kong @liujackc had been in the space for years

He was the Chief Strategy Officer at @OKCoin

After moving on to have more time for his own projects, he introduced me to his former colleagues who needed someone to lead business development
Seemed like a great fit

Except 2018 was a tough year for crypto markets. They lost 80% of their value from 2017 highs

But we still believed

Still believed the mathematical inevitability of a currency crisis

So we stuck it out

And here we are today, with BTC crossing $10K
