Art was never truly apolitical or not influenced by the current world state. You'll know this if you study art history.
During the Gothic period, art was mainly produced for churches since they had the biggest moneybags. With the Renaissance, the 'rebirth of art' happened and people started depicting things as they are – slowly moving from the Catholic influence on art.
Even back then people got sh*t for it. A lot of artists were rebels trying to change the world when it wasn't alright. Although the main point of creating art is showing the world through the artist's eye. The artist wants to communicate with the participant through their medium.
There were also other times where politics controlled the art, saying that one type of art is "good" and "appreciated", the other one is "bad" and "worthless."

I'm talking here specifically about the art in Third Reich.
N*zis had not only propaganda art (promoting the military and N*zi lifestyle) but also had their overall aesthetics and censored the "bad" art that was either modern (e.g. impressionistic) or foreign (from different cultures or done by a foreign person.)
Look up the exhibition "Entartete Kunst."
It translates to "Degenerate Art."

Art was always changing with the world. Another great example was the invention of photography. Art lost its meaning as "depicting reality" or "things as they are" since there was a new challenger in the game. Cameras were more efficient than portrait artists were.
Then again photography had to find its way to be acknowledged as art because of it being very technical. The main point of photography was and still is: depicting and documenting the world. However, it can have an artsy flavor if you have the artistic eye for it 😉
That's all for now, but recent discourses really get me thinking. We do not learn history for nothing... Please, do not repeat the same dumb mistakes we did in the past. Please.

With that said - what is your favourite artistic period? Mine is Expressionism.
