hi i’m gonna make a thread about being nonbinary because apparently y’all don’t understand what it means! #AlwaysProud
ok let’s start w the actual definition of nonbinary. nonbinary is (obviously) not being part of a binary, or identifying as not male or female. it is different from being agender.
agender people have 0 gender identity. nonbinary people do have a gender identity but it presents itself differently in each nonbinary individual.
nonbinary people are not male. we are also not female. we do not fit into the gender binary, and we are not part of a “trinary” either. this ties in with nonbinary lesbians and gays.
i am not a lesbian and i am not gay, so my opinion on nonbinary lesbians/gays will never be as important as actual lesbians/gays. HOWEVER, as a nonbinary individual, i do believe i can speak on this topic with a little bit of knowledge.
nonbinary people have always been included in lesbian and gay identities. lesbians have always been able to be attracted to nonbinary people, and gay people can ALSO be attracted to nonbinary people.
nonbinary people can also identify as lesbians or gays, depending on the gender that they are attracted to.
now for pronouns. nonbinary people can use whatever pronouns they want. pronouns do not equal gender, although they can line up. for example, a nonbinary individual can use he/him but it would still be misgendering to refer to him as a boy unless he states he’s okay with it.
nonbinary people ALL have different relationships to pronouns and to gender. some of us believe that our pronouns directly relate to gender, and some of us don’t. that’s okay. what’s NOT okay is when you tell other nonbinary people what pronouns they can and cannot +
use because of YOUR personal beliefs. for me, i believe nonbinary people can use whatever pronouns they want, but i’m not gonna attack nonbinary people who chose to only use they/them. hell, i only use they/them.
let’s talk about the infantilization of nonbinary people, specifically by white cis girls. often, we’re referred to as “enbabies” “nonbinary cuties” “nonbinary babies” etc. etc.
that’s fucking annoying. don’t do that. we’re people, and most of us are older teens or adults. we are not babies. obviously that doesn’t apply for pet names in relationships but it’s an issue when you infantilize ALL nonbinary people.
finally, let’s talk about the representation of nonbinary people in media.
there’s not a lot of blatant nonbinary representation. for example, Janet from The Good Place. she’s listed as nonbinary, but... she’s literally not a person. so for me, that really isn’t nonbinary rep as much as it is non-human rep.
another example is Crowley and Aziraphale from Good Omens. they are ALSO both listed as nonbinary. but... they’re a demon and an angel respectively. obviously they’re not human. that’s not nonbinary rep.
Listing non-humans as “nonbinary representation” is honestly cheap and lazy. nonbinary people deserve actual, HUMAN representation.
obviously, loving crowley, aziraphale, and janet as nonbinary is fine! nonbinary people are welcome to love them as representation. however, i ask that all people realize that nonbinary people are human and we deserve to be seen as such.
