Snake around lord #Shiva's neck
Beliefs & Significance:

Images of snakes coiled around or 5 headed snake as canopy are often depicted with linga. Snakes serve Shiva as his sacred thread, necklace, bracelets, bowstring & are occasionally found on his clothes

The snake around lord's neck :
1. signifies that he is independent of time & death. It also suggests the dormant energy called kundalini shakti that resides within him

2. signifies the ego which if mastered can be worn as an ornament

3. symbolizes the endless cycle of life & death. The other snakes found on him in the form of girdle, armlets etc symbolize the eternal revolution of ages and the successive dissolution and regeneration

4. The popular association of Lord Shiva with snake is during churning of the ocean (Samdura Manthan). Shiva drinks the poison that came out of snake Vasuki, who was used as the rope in the churning. He is also named as Nilkantha with naag vasuki around his neck

5. As per a legend, at the time of their marriage, devi Parvati asked Shiva for ornaments. Shiva then gathered all the snakes and made ornaments from them. This episode has mentions in Skanda Purana & also in Padma Purana and the Matsya Purana

6. Lord shiva is often shown with a snake curled three times around neck symbolising past, present & future - time in cycles. The snake looking towards right side signifies that Lord's perpetual laws of reasons & justice preserve natural order in the universe
