Just sat thru a 3.5 hour long school board meeting. My take aways:
1) forget full in person school. This stopped being an option months ago when America decided bars opening was more important than schools. But this isn’t a surprise 1/
The second take away: the hybrid model is a costly mess to achieve broadly. Schools accrue costs for both remote and in person learning. And the in-person costs are staggering. Bussing. PPE for school nurses, who will soon become ‘frontline heroes’ (ie cannon fodder). Etc 2/
The hybrid model will completely over tax our teachers, who will have to manage both classrooms: online and in person. While acting as social distancing referees for fidgety kids. /3
Currently MA is requiring schools to plan for three separate options: full in-person, hybrid and full remote. This means that schools are wasting time planning for fairy tale in-person scenarios rather than try to get one model done well. /4
So if we disregard full in-person schooling, we choose between the unlikely and incredibly costly hybrid scenario, or the remote option that was implemented poorly because we neglected to prepare appropriately bc we wasted time telling ourselves fairy tales. /5
By neglecting to plan for the inevitability of remote learning, we are ensuring that remote learning fails. Yippee! /6
One addendum: hybrid could be possible on a limited basis: special ed and perhaps very young learners. Ie students who absolutely req in- person teaching. But trying to do entire schools as hybrid not feasible (at least in my school district, but prolly yours too.)
