Let's talk about raises. Review time is coming up for most technical places & I know most of us want to increase our salary but how do you approach that conversation to increase your salary. In the next few tweets in this thread I will cover how to position yourself correctly
One of the common things you will hear is I work really hard I deserve a raise. While those words most of the times are true, most people stop there. By stopping there I mean that's the case they make to management to increase their salary. Usually that fails the person doesn't
Feel valued so they leave the company. Where should we start
1. Each job has a description as far as roles & responsibilities. This is where we start.
2. First make sure you are meeting all of these to satisfaction.
3. Now this is where you make your money.

4. Have a list of responsibilities or functions that are outside the scope of your role. Talk about how you not only your current roles expectations but exceeded them. Have examples. (Good be a project you headed , a upgrade you were over or any other thing)
4a. The important thing here is to highlight these roles are outside of your scope but you were happy to help the team
5. If you haven't done 4. Focus on 3. Maybe you have excelled at completing task & responsibilities at a more efficient pace than previous employees.

5a. So use those metrics to show your value. If the project was estimated at 6 months but you did it in 3 to 4 months. That's ROI (return on investment) they can use in other areas. Ie your time can now be used to complete other projects.
6. When talking to management always

6a. Want to hand numbers, charts, or examples of work performed.
7. Additionally high light times when you took a leadership role& helped team members complete work as well as your own.
8. Never make is personal or use the they owe you because of your work examples

9. If you need justification you can pull industry standard pay for people who perform the task you are doing (may be a different role than yours but the money still applies)
Using this approach you have made a more compelling case& should secure your raise.

I hope this helps and by all means get what you deserve.

Also if it's not review time there are other ways to bring this up. Talk about the career path lsid out that the company has. Mention wanting to get to x point, director, manager, senior level person.
Then set up a monthly meeting with your manager in order to track progress &

Have accountability both ways. You don't want to put in a lot of work only to find out months later it isn't what they were looking for.
Ok that's it for now enjoy getting your bag
