It’s officially Travel Baseball Tryout season. This is the 2nd consecutive year I have no skin in the game - no teams, no organization, just 13 years of Travel Ball experience, and 40 years of coaching & learning insight. Players & Parents; I urge you to have a conversation
regarding what it is you both want out of your Travel Ball experience before hitting the tryout circuit this summer. I’d be interested in the recidivism rate for travel ball across the country? It’s not high for sure, and the question is why? I submit to you it begins w/parents &
players not even having the same goals, which then leads to a lot of discontentment that’s directed towards the coaches and teammates ultimately. Once you have an understanding of your why, do some research on the organization/team/coaches/etc. on what their why is and how their
experience & knowledge base is capable of them even executing what they say their why is. I’m not telling you what your why should be, but I am amazed at how many people fall for any song & dance that comes out of a coaches/GM’s mouth, or anything they claim on social media
Without ever doing their homework on if these things are true or even capable of being true?! There are some very good travel programs out there but chances are they aren’t the loudest blowhards out there making claims that can’t possibly be true. The great programs won’t put
Pressure on you to sign up today or you will lose your spot, (if you are good, you will find your spot!), they will want you to feel comfortable and be committed to their philosophies & expectations before saying yes, they will promise you nothing except the opportunity to reach
Your goals and your why, and they will be honest with you about how playing time works, etc. It’s very similar to choosing where you want to attend college, where you want to work, who you want to marry, etc. If you are looking for someone to wow you and whisper sweet nothings in
your ear to make you feel all warm and great about yourself, those people are out there & you will receive the reward for that travel ball approach. If you want something that is rich & meaningful and long-lasting, then do the process correctly to give yourself your best chance
for success. There you go twitter travel-ball world. I’m hoping both of my followers enjoy my random thoughts! And the rest of you enjoy the great game of baseball for what it is!! It’s been a great life and blessing beyond measure for me. I’d love for many of you to have it too!
