There is no one way to make it in this industry.
A thread.
In 2018 I was referred to several managers by people who'd read me. They were very nice, but didn't want to read my scripts because "nobody's buying feature comedies."
This was incredibly frustrating. It sort of felt like everyone just wanted "elevated thrillers" or TV writers. I mentioned to a friend who suggested I start connecting with directors & producers instead.
This had really worked for my friend (he's also a director) so I thought I should give it a try. For me personally, I found a lot of producers and directors much more accessible.
They weren't just following they latest trend on what they could sell quickly - they had a more holistic approach to the types of projects they wanted to be involved in.
And I have learned A TON in the last 2 years. Understand how that side of the business works has informed my writing in very different ways.
Now working on 2 projects that I'm soooooo excited about and I can't wait to tell y'all about them.
Some will find success with:
Managers
Contests
Script consultants
Twitter Networking
fellowships
referrals
Classes
directing your own scripts
