so, there are some huge, glaring translation errors and straight up omittance of details in the original translation of stone ocean that i've noticed after translating the first two chapters

at the start of chapter 2, they wrote jolyne doesn't know the name of her own boyfriend for some reason. this is a mistranslation because she says 名前なんだけどさ, not 名前なんだっけ which is what i assume the other translators thought it meant (old -> mine)

right after this, a joke made by romeo is completely missed. he actually says that she can only butcher his name like that if she's gargling water. the other translator localized the nickname to "romi," but the joke would no longer make sense

for some reason, romeo offers jolyne some of the alcohol in the old version

jolyne weirdly mentions "telepathy" as a super roundabout way to say they should connect with each other

lots of stuff is left out here, including jolyne telling romeo the correct, western way to say tattoo instead of the japanese word for it (タトゥー vs いれずみ)

the trial is completely screwed up, including a muddy explanation of a plea bargain

in reality the lawyer includes more details that indicate to the reader that this might be a set-up

this is where it starts to get confusing. in the original translation her lawyer says that she can get out of jail immediately if she uses a "grace period" after taking the plea bargain, but that doesn't make any sense if a plea bargain implies she's going to prison regardless

here the other translation outright states that she doesn't have to go to prison at all, which doesn't make any sense

here in the incorrect translation the judge's line is scattered throughout the following lines as opposed to just being said. also there's a grammatical error in the first bubble but that's just nitpicking

this is the worst part: JOLYNE AND ROMEO'S VICTIM WAS ALIVE WHEN THEY STUFFED HIM IN THE TRUNK! this is why she's convicted of murder! but the original translation says the hitchhiker was dead!

why would jolyne be confused about a corpse if she was under the impression that the man was dead? cos he was alive and romeo mistakenly pronounced him dead in a panic!

here the original translation implies that the victime might have been alive, but does so in a way that makes it unclear whether he stayed alive afterward or if he died on impact

of course there are other things but these are the things i thought were noteworthy enough to post. keep in mind this is the same translation used in the color version and this was ONLY chapter 2!
