Riddle me this:
Q1. If Assange was 'a spy', who exactly was he 'spying for'?
Q2: If Assange is not 'a spy', why is he being charged under the Espionage Act?
Q3: If the things published by Assange were so dangerous to the US, why did President Obama pardon the person who gave so many to him, and was arguably even more criminally liable?
Q4. If the US manages to convict Assange, that will mean that no one, ever will ever dare to publish crimes by Western democracies, no matter how egregious, even to standard of a holocaust, and even if they are true.
Q5. If it was possible to rely on existing media sources for criticism of the US Govt as a whole, why have none of the major media sources caused for action against the crimes exposed by Assange?
Major media companies in the western world are uniformly controlled by billionaires tied to one of the two major parties in their country (or both). Why would they rock the boat, considering their licensees depend on Govt approval?
If you think that major media companies or even public broadcasters like the BBC and ABC would always find out about and fearlessly report any really egregious by government it's worth remembering the 'WMD' scandal. No only did we go to war, Blair and Bush are both free, rich men
Finally if what Assange did was so bad, why didn't Katherine Graham, Bill Bradley and the Editorial team of the Washington Post go to gaol after the release of the Pentagon Papers, and Watergate? Why was it Nixon that actually resigned if the publishers were in fact criminal?
If Wikileaks, and anything like it dies forever, we would have to really really trust our governments to do the right thing. Do you trust Donald, Mike, and Scott to always do the right thing? Not sure I do.
I think it may be best in the western world that we adopt a Cold War saying to our politicians 'trust, but verify'..
Without things like Wikileaks, Snowden etc, how the hell do we verify? Fox News, the NYT? Anyone?
