A question for editors: Do you feel like your gender/how writers perceive your gender affects the way you phrase your notes and edits? Sometimes I wonder how much I get away with as a cis man by just saying “this isn’t working, try this” or just “cut.”
I’d bet editors who are women get asked more often by writers (of all genders) to explain their edits rather than editors who are men. I’ve never been asked to explain my edits, I think—though I do sometimes give rationale when it’s necessary—but I know women who have been.
Agreed. I try not to phrase my edits as 'suggestions' unless they're actual suggestions. More often I give direction with explanation or ask questions. Otherwise, a writer might make an edit and.......make it worse. https://twitter.com/rkambury/status/1287892669658812419
Yesssss 100% I absolutely love going “we” or just removing the “I” in edits. Center the writer/the piece/the team always. https://twitter.com/ellamorton/status/1287901803242233856?s=21 https://twitter.com/ellamorton/status/1287901803242233856
